Join us as we welcome back WCVB Channel 5 and Chronicles Ted Reinstein for a talk on his latest book: Greetings from Breed's Hill: Fact & Folklore on America's 250th.
“Greetings from Breed’s Hill: Fact & Folklore on America’s 250th” is a fast-paced, fun, and informative look at some of the unique stories I’ve done related to the Revolutionary War period, as well as some later history as well. Here’s the twist: these stories caught my eye originally because, in most cases, they involved famous, even iconic moments in our founding history which had another angle to them that was often not well-known. School children still learn about Paul Revere’s famous ride. Few people know that the ride wasn’t free, and that Revere later submitted a detailed expense report to the Continental Congress. (Which tried to stiff him.) Most New Englanders know that the Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought on nearby Breed’s Hill, but how many know that the Breeds and Bunkers continue their centuries-old grudge to this very day? And that oddly pockmarked colonial-era gravestone in the North End that looks like it’s been used for target practice? It was. 250 years ago.
The new talk is a unique and enjoyable way to add programming for the nation’s 250th anniversary. Learn a bit, laugh a bit, all in under an hour.
